About Us
As a first-generation, minority, transfer student at UCLA, I felt discouraged from the lack of support, resources, or community for prospective HR professionals like me, so I thought, ‘Why not create the first HR community and mentorship I desire for myself and everyone else.' " — Ximmy Wang, Founding President
In September 2020, SHRM at UCLA was created from the vision of fulfilling UCLA’s need for a community that serves students interested in developing into human resource professionals. Midst COVID-19, eight strangers came together through the power of social media to create the first student-led HR organization at UCLA. Despite warnings about the difficulty of starting a club completely online, the founding members diligently overcame doubts and barriers.
We hit the ground running in organizing events centered around online talks, workshops, and trainings that gave students career development opportunities in human resources. As we quickly grew to 50+ members subscribed to our resource newsletters and events, six more founding board members joined to support the growth of SHRM at UCLA into the well-connected powerhouse and resource for future HR professionals at UCLA.
We believe that when life gives you a pandemic, you can still start a club entirely online, create events that showcase professionals all across the country and develop a supportive community of up-and-coming HR professionals.
Signed by Founding Members: Ximmy Wang, Ingrid Chang, Brian Ha, Nick Widjaya, Britt Samaras, Evelyn Arrieta, Leah Towery, Natalie Dunn, Isabella Richards, Jazmine Morales, Cherry Huang, Jennifer Be, Vivian Yee, and Stephanie Foo.

Thank you Pamela Sklar, Sherry Johnson, Liliana Argüello, Trisha Zulic, Scott Wimer, David Swanson, Eric Hubert, Walen Ngo, Eddie Fisher, Kristopher Kaupalolo, Sarena Tsang, Melanie Rodriguez, Nicole Garcia, Melissa Valencia Damian, Jose Valencia, John Kim, Sahana Vairavaraj, and all our volunteer professionals from across the U.S. who shared their time with us.

Our Community
"Before I joined SHRM at UCLA, I knew I had an inclination towards human resources and organizational development, but I wasn't aware of any on-campus opportunities to explore the fields. After becoming a SHRM at UCLA member, I've become more confident in my post-grad career path! I enjoy the meetings because I always learn something new about fascinating concepts, like how human resources is changing due to remote workplaces, or how I can use my LinkedIn page to reflect my values." -Kanishka Mehra

"My college journey before joining SHRM at UCLA was full of uncertainty. I did not know what I was going to do nor how I was going to achieve my goals. Once I joined SHRM at UCLA, I was given the resources, guidance, and support needed to chart a career path and be more confident. This came in the form of networking with professionals, being surrounded by like-minded individuals, and forming a cohesive team to execute chapter activities." -Brian Ha

"My college journey with SHRM at UCLA has helped me grow personally and professionally. I've grown to be more confident in my leadership, networking, and public-speaking skills having the opportunity to plan events, chat with professionals, and lead general meetings. Additionally, I have met so many amazing students passionate about being leaders in the HR industry and creating positive change! There is a great diversity of students part of SHRM at UCLA, and they have definitely helped shape the club's supportive and welcoming culture." - Isabella Richards
